There are many services and people who can help you along the way. Organizations in the community will prove valuable to you as you seek employment. Mentorships and volunteering can also be very useful, though these may be terms that you’re not familiar with. A mentor is someone who is experienced and offers advice to another; a volunteer is someone who works without pay to help someone else or to gain work experience. It will pay off if you take time to become familiar with new methods as you work toward finding employment in your new community.
One of those resources is the London Middlesex Immigrant Employment Council’s (LMIEC) newsletter. You may connect with this organization through settlement agencies and community partners. Many connected with this organization which has advice and experience that will help you, so the information contained in the newsletter will be valuable. LMIEC programs are accessed through local organizations and agencies that provide the direct job search assistance.
According to one successfully employed newcomer: “Information is key; seek informational interviews (talking with employers about jobs rather than asking for a job) and ask lots of questions so you can better understand the differences in culture, priorities and processes in your field.”
